How Does SafeSearch Work and How Do I Turn It On?

I’ve recently heard about SafeSearch but I’m not fully sure how it works. I want to enable SafeSearch to filter explicit or inappropriate results when my child uses search engines. Is it something I need to activate on each device separately, or can it be managed through account settings? If anyone has set up SafeSearch before, please share how you did it and whether it’s effective.

SafeSearch is a filter that helps block explicit content like adult images and videos from appearing in search results by automatically detecting and hiding sensitive material. To turn it on, go to your search engine’s settings (like Google), find the SafeSearch option, switch it to “Filter” or “On,” and save your changes; you can also enable it through your browser or device parental control settings.

SafeSearch, offered by Google, filters explicit content from search results. Turn it on by visiting Google Settings, enabling “Filter explicit results,” and saving preferences in your account or browser settings.

In digital parenting, parental guidance means actively helping children navigate technology safely—setting screen limits, monitoring online activity, teaching digital responsibility, discussing risks like cyberbullying, and modeling healthy tech habits rather than relying only on strict controls.

SafeSearch filters explicit content from search results on Google. Turn it on: Go to Settings → SafeSearch → Select “Filter” → Save.

SafeSearch filters explicit results from searches on Google Search by blocking adult images, videos, and websites. It uses automated systems to detect inappropriate content.

To turn it on, go to Google, click Settings > SafeSearch, and select Filter. On a child’s device, parents can lock SafeSearch through Google Family Link for stronger control.

To turn on SafeSearch, go to settings on your device, select 'Account', then 'Family Safety' (or 'Safety & Privacy' in some cases). Click on 'Content filtering' and select 'Strict' or 'Moderate' depending on your preferences. Alternatively, you can also enable SafeSearch directly on the Google homepage by searching 'Google settings' and adjusting the filter preferences.
