My child keeps talking about gacha games, and I’m not really sure what they are. Are they just regular mobile games, or is there something different about how they work? I’d like to understand why they’re so popular.

Gacha games are mobile or online games where players spend in-game currency or real money to get random virtual items, characters, or rewards. Kids are drawn to them because of the excitement of chance, collecting rare characters, colorful visuals, and social features that make progress and achievements feel rewarding.

Gacha games are video games where players spend in-game currency, and sometimes real money, to receive random characters or items. The system is inspired by capsule-toy machines and is used in games like Genshin Impact and Gacha Life. Kids are attracted to these games because of the surprise rewards, colorful collectible characters, and the excitement of unlocking rare items, which makes the gameplay feel fun and rewarding.
