What is SOS Meaning in Text Messages?

I recently saw “SOS” pop up on my child’s phone and wasn’t sure what SOS meaning is in texting. I know it traditionally stands for a distress signal, but I’m wondering if kids are using it differently in chats or on social media. Can someone explain what SOS usually stands for in text messages? Is it always serious, or can it be used casually or jokingly? I just want to better understand the context before reacting.

SOS in text messages usually means “Save Our Souls” or “Save Our Ship,” a universal distress signal. Today, it’s used to show urgency or ask for immediate help. In casual chats, someone might text “SOS” when they’re in trouble, need assistance, or feel overwhelmed.
