What Is the Simp Meaning in Teen Slang?

Hi everyone, I recently heard my teen and their friends using the word “simp,” and I’m not sure what the simp meaning actually is. Is it meant as a joke, an insult, or something harmless? I want to better understand the slang my child is exposed to so I can guide them appropriately. If other parents have come across this term, I’d appreciate a clear explanation of how it’s commonly used.

In teen slang, “simp” refers to someone who shows excessive attention, admiration, or affection toward another person often someone they like romantically without receiving the same level of interest in return. It’s usually used playfully or teasingly among friends, especially on platforms like TikTok and Instagram, but it can sometimes carry a negative tone. The term suggests that a person is trying too hard to impress someone or putting that person on a pedestal.
