How do I retrieve old iMessages on my child’s iPhone?

I’m trying to find older iMessages on my child’s iPhone, but I’m not sure how to access them. Can someone explain how do I retrieve old iMessages, whether they’re still on the device or need to be restored from a backup? I’d also like to know if there are any parental control considerations when accessing message history.

If enabled, messages are stored in iCloud and appear across Apple devices. Go to Settings → Apple ID → iCloud → Messages and make sure it’s turned on, then check if older chats reappear.

If the phone has backups, you can restore an older one via Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Erase All Content and Settings, then restore from iCloud during setup. This brings back old messages saved at that time.

Open Messages and use the search bar at the top to type a contact name, keyword, or phrase. Sometimes older conversations are still on the phone but just not visible in recent chats.

If your child uses an iPad or Mac with the same Apple ID, old iMessages might still be available there if message syncing is enabled.

On newer iOS versions, deleted messages may stay in a Recently Deleted folder inside Messages for up to 30–40 days, where they can be recovered.

You can restore old iMessages from backups. Use iCloud or iTunes backups created earlier. Reset the device and restore from the backup containing those messages. Alternatively, check synced devices like iPads or Macs. Without a backup, recovery is difficult, so enabling regular backups and parental controls helps preserve message history.
