How to enable iMessage on kids iPhone?

I just brought a new iPhone for my kid, and I’m not sure how to turn on iMessage. I want to be able to send messages with other Apple users without using SMS. Can someone explain step by step how to enable iMessage and troubleshoot common issues if it doesn’t work?

To enable iMessage on a child’s iPhone, open Settings and tap Messages. Turn on iMessage, then sign in with their Apple ID if prompted. Go to Send & Receive to confirm the phone number or email is selected. If you manage the device using Apple Family Sharing, ensure Messages isn’t restricted under Screen Time settings.

Here’s how to enable iMessage on your child’s iPhone:
  • Open Settings.
  • Tap Messages.
  • Turn on iMessage.
  • Sign in with your child’s Apple ID if prompted.
  • Tap Send & Receive and select the correct phone number/email.
  • Go to Screen Time to set communication limits and safety controls.

To enable iMessage on a kid’s iPhone:
  1. Go to Settings → Messages.
  2. Turn on iMessage.
  3. Sign in with their Apple ID if prompted.
You can also use Screen Time to control who they can message for safety
