How to ping a phone to find its location safely?

I’ve heard about “pinging a phone” to find its location, but I’m not sure what that actually means. Can someone explain how to ping a phone and whether it’s something parents can use to locate a child’s device? I’d also like to know the safest and legal ways to track a phone using built-in features or apps, rather than anything complicated or risky. Any simple steps or tools would be helpful.

You generally can’t “ping” a phone for its location unless you have permission and the right service set up; anything else is either unreliable or unsafe. The proper way is to use built-in features like Find My (iPhone) or Find My Device (Android), which let you locate your own phone or a family member’s device after enabling location sharing. I’ve used Google’s Find My Device before, and it works well as long as the phone is online and location is turned on. Just sign in and track it from a browser. Avoid third-party “tracking” apps that promise silent tracking, as they’re often scams or privacy risks.
