I’ve noticed my child using FW in messages, and I’m not sure what it means. Can someone explain what FW means in texting and how it’s typically used? I want to make sure I understand common slang so I can better guide my child and stay aware of their online communication.

FW means forward, as in sending a message or post to someone else (like “fw this to me”). In some contexts, it can also stand for “friends with” (used when talking about relationships) or even “free will” in more thoughtful or philosophical conversations. Like most slang, the exact meaning depends on how and where it’s used.

This term is often used for texting, and it refers to “forward”. Parents need to know what it means because it will help them to be familiar with the conversation and how messages are shared.

In texting, “FW” usually means “forward” (like sharing a message) or sometimes “f*ck with” (slang for liking or messing with something, depending on context). Parents don’t need to memorize every slang term, but having a basic understanding helps them stay aware of how kids communicate and spot any concerning language or behavior.

FW may also be used in meaning in texting, such as: F*** With (to like or favor something) or Forward in emails. It is frequently used in teen slang, meaning approval, as in I FW that. Since it might contain some mild profanity or vague intentions, parents are to see the context. The awareness will enable the parents to be aware of tone, avoid misinterpretations, and advise teens to adopt respectful and appropriate communication patterns.
