What Does YOLO Mean in Text and Is It Something to Worry About?

I’ve seen my teen use YOLO in texts and social media posts, and I’m not completely sure what YOLO means in this context. From what I can tell, it seems related to taking risks or doing something spontaneous. Can someone explain what YOLO stands for and how kids typically use it today? Is it usually harmless slang, or can it sometimes encourage risky behaviour? I’d appreciate some insight so I can better understand the meaning behind it.

YOLO is an acronym for "You Only Live Once". It is a modern, slang version of the Latin phrase Carpe diem ("seize the day"), used to encourage living life to the fullest or taking risks because life is short.

It stands for “You Only Live Once,” and most teens use it jokingly before doing something fun or spontaneous; it’s usually harmless, but yeah, sometimes it can be used to justify risky stuff, so it’s worth just keeping an open, casual convo about it.
