I often see the term RSVP on invitations and event messages, but I’m not exactly sure what it means. Does it stand for something, and what are you supposed to do when you see RSVP on an invite? Is it necessary to respond every time? I’d appreciate it if someone could explain RSVP meaning and how it’s properly used in different situations.

RSVP means “please respond”—it comes from the French phrase Répondez s’il vous plaît. It’s used in invitations to ask people to confirm whether they will attend an event. For example, on a party invite you might see “RSVP by Friday,” which means you should reply (yes or no) before that date.
