What is private browsing and does it really keep my activity hidden?

I’ve seen a private browsing option in my kid's browser menu, but I’m not clear on what it actually does. Does it hide everything, like downloads, history, or information from my ISP?

I think private browsing is often misunderstood as a foolproof way to keep activities hidden, but it's actually just a means to prevent browser history and cookies from being stored on the device. It doesn't encrypt internet traffic or hide IP addresses, so it's still possible for websites and third-party trackers to collect information about your browsing habits.

Private browsing, also known as incognito mode, doesn't completely hide your activity. It stops your browser from storing data like history, cookies, and login info. However, websites can still track you through unique device IDs, IP addresses, and other means. Be cautious and use a VPN for added security.

Private browsing in browsers like Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, or Safari prevents your device from saving browsing history, cookies, and form data after the session ends.

However, it does not completely hide your activity. Your internet service provider, employer, school network, or the websites you visit can still see your activity.

Private browsing mode enables you to surf the web without your history, cookies, or search details being recorded on your device. Closing the session will only erase local traces of your pages and searches. But it doesn't mask your activities completely, as your ISPs (internet service providers) and network administrators can still monitor what you're doing, and so can websites that you visit. Therefore, it only offers privacy protection for the device itself.

Private browsing (like Incognito in Google Chrome or Private Window in Mozilla Firefox) means your browser doesn’t save history, cookies, or form data on your device after you close the window.

Private Browsing is a feature in browsers like Google Chrome or Safari that stops the device from saving history, cookies, or form data. However, it doesn’t fully hide activity—websites, internet providers, schools, or workplaces may still see the browsing activity online.
